For a new custom aluminum profile, suppliers usually quote MOQ by weight for each profile. Chinese supplier examples commonly fall around 500-1,000 kg, or 1,102-2,205 lb.
One metric ton, or 1,000 kg, is therefore a practical planning figure for China sourcing. It is not a universal standard or a guaranteed quantity for every drawing.
Some suppliers will negotiate a smaller prototype or trial order. That is a separate order type and price structure. It does not remove the normal production MOQ.
Before comparing quotes, confirm what the minimum covers. It may apply per profile, die, alloy, finish, color, cut length, or shipment.
What Is a Typical Custom Aluminum Extrusion MOQ?
The right range depends on the order stage and the supplier’s equipment. Pounds and kilograms also create easy comparison errors.

These ranges describe market examples, not fixed industry rules. A miniature profile can suit a smaller press and trial quantity. A large profile may require a heavier billet and longer stable run.
The crucial distinction is the order type. A supplier might accept 100 kg as a paid trial, then quote 1,000 kg for production. Both quantities can be valid within the same project.
For initial budgeting, treat 100 kg as a trial request rather than a routine expectation. Treat 500 kg as the lower end of many published China examples. Use 1,000 kg as the safer planning quantity until a drawing-specific quote replaces it.
Stock shapes require another distinction. Buying an available profile or using an existing die is not the same as ordering a new custom cross-section.
Why Do Custom Aluminum Extrusion MOQs Exist?
The press does not start with saleable profile immediately. A crew changes the die and prepares it for the required alloy and profile.
The die may need inspection, cleaning, repair, preheating, or adjustment. Operators then set billet temperature, tooling temperature, extrusion speed, and other process conditions.
The Aluminum Association’s extrusion overview explains how these variables affect the process. The supplier must stabilize them before normal output begins.
Trial material is checked for dimensions and surface quality. The press team may adjust speed, temperature, or the die before approving the run.
Most preparation remains necessary whether the order is 100 kg or 1,000 kg. A very short run gives the supplier less output to absorb that time.
The process also leaves non-deliverable material. The Aluminum Extruders Council FAQ describes the billet butt that remains after direct extrusion.
MOQ is therefore an economic production condition, not a claim that smaller extrusion is physically impossible. A negotiated trial usually carries separate tooling, setup, material, inspection, and finishing terms.
Does the MOQ Apply Per Profile or Per Order?
Many quotations apply the MOQ to each cross-section. Two profiles using different dies usually cannot share one 1,000 kg minimum.
The same drawing can also create separate production lots. Ask the supplier how these variables affect the quantity:
- profile and die number;
- alloy and temper;
- finish and color;
- cut length and CNC operations;
- inspection and packaging;
- shipment or release schedule.
For example, 600 kg of Profile A and 400 kg of Profile B may not combine. A 1,000 kg per-profile MOQ must be met separately.
Anodizing and powder coating can create another minimum. The extruder may accept one quantity while the finishing line requires a larger batch or minimum charge.
Annual demand also needs careful wording. A 5,000 kg blanket order can support planning. Each press release may still need an economic run size.
Convert MOQ Between Kilograms, Pounds, and Tons
Always preserve the original unit from the supplier’s quotation. Then add a rounded conversion for comparison.

A metric ton equals 1,000 kg, or about 2,205 lb. A U.S. short ton equals 2,000 lb, or about 907 kg.
This difference matters in an RFQ. Writing only `one ton` can create a gap of about 93 kg between two interpretations.
Do not confuse 500-1,000 pounds with 500-1,000 kilograms. The kilogram range is about 2.2 times heavier.
Convert a Weight MOQ Into Meters and Pieces
A weight minimum becomes useful only after you know the profile mass per meter. That value comes from the drawing and confirmed extrusion geometry.
Theoretical length = MOQ in kg / profile weight in kg per meter
For cut parts, include the cut length:
Theoretical pieces = MOQ in kg / (profile kg/m x cut length in meters)
Assume the production MOQ is 1,000 kg. The profile weighs 1.2 kg/m, and each part is 0.5 m long.
Each net part weighs 0.6 kg. Dividing 1,000 kg by 0.6 kg gives about 1,667 theoretical pieces.
That number is not a delivery promise. Trial output, billet butt, saw loss, rejects, and finishing loss can reduce the final count.
If planning yield is 90%, the estimate becomes about 1,500 pieces. The 90% figure is hypothetical and must be replaced by the supplier’s project estimate.
Ask whether MOQ means billet input, chargeable extrusion, saleable profile, or delivered finished parts. Also confirm permitted overrun and underrun.
When Can the MOQ Be Lower or Higher?
A lower quantity becomes more realistic when the supplier already has a suitable die. Standard profiles and stocked lengths can reduce the purchase commitment further.
Miniature-extrusion specialists may run smaller billets and presses. Their capability should not be generalized to large industrial profiles.
A supplier can also quote a prototype or trial separately. Compare its total validation cost with the inventory risk of ordering the production MOQ immediately.
The MOQ may rise for a large or heavy profile. A special alloy, difficult geometry, demanding surface finish, or restricted press schedule can also increase it.
Downstream operations may set their own thresholds. CNC machining, anodizing, coating, heat treatment, inspection, and special packaging need separate confirmation.
An annual order with scheduled releases may improve commercial terms. It does not automatically let several profiles, alloys, or colors share one production minimum.
How Should You Compare Supplier MOQ Quotes?
The lowest headline MOQ does not always produce the lowest delivered cost. Put every supplier on the same quantity and scope basis.
The same stated weight can also produce different finished quantities. One supplier may quote billet input, while another quotes saleable extrusion. Normalize both offers to expected finished pieces, total delivered cost, and required delivery date.
MOQ defines the minimum, but permitted overrun affects maximum inventory. Review both figures before approving tooling or releasing production.
